Smile Rx7 Owners racing pro.

Saturday i got the opportunity of going to a Formula Drift event. Needles to say it was awesome. I only saw one fc and two rx8. So I was wondering with so many people here that like drifting and have good builds. why aren't you guys racing in this pro series. it would be nice to see rotary make it to at least third place in these type of events where so many people attend. Most cars there are V8s, is like the same song repeating itself.

All I am saying is rx7 owners should represent the rotary engine. If i could i would give it a try. i think i got the skills but don't have the money to build a good car lol. but some of you that already have all of the above should definitely go for it.

They simply can't survive in the power needed to be competitive. You need to be able to do a wide variety of things over and over, and that is one thing a turbo rotary can not do well. In order to make a rotary do what a stock V8 can do is very costly and has still lacks response and reliability. People trying to make a rotary perform on the same level as a V8 will simply run out of money and will still be down missing events / not getting points. (Buckey for example, not having enough power, and continually blowing up his engine.)

Start building up a car, you will QUICKLY see how expensive it is to just pass tech.

Justin P., George K., Jeremy Lowe, Ny and 1-2 other used to or do run an FC in Formula Drift.

Calvin Wan, Tony Angelo, and 1-2 other used to or do run an FD.

Rhys Millen, Tony Angelo, Joon, BMI, Justin P., Kyle Mohan, and 1-2 others used to or do run an RX8.

That is just off the top of my head. Many have tried...many have failed :/ I know George and Ny's cars were V8 though.

Didn't Angelo use to have that SR'd FC as well? I recall seeing it at Mineral Wells once

I'm pretty sure Jeremy Low who has a turbo 13-B has made it to everyone of Formula D and only didn't qualify for top 32 once. The only time he didn't qualify was because of driving, not the engine.

It's very much doable.

Maeng has over 700whp in his 20b rx8, and I'm pretty sure mohan is in the 500's with his rx8

my reason for going v8 was two fold.

1. i dont have the patience to learn to build a motor that runs well. Jlowe can do it because he and his dad have dozens of years of experience. so does mohan(mazdatrix) and hergenholz.

2. it's costs a lot to get it right. as a privateer i don't have much money to rebuild a motor i dont know how to put together in the first place.

the rotary can be very competitive if done correctly. I would argue that the guys running rotaries have taken themselves out with their driving and not because of the motor. hell my V8 doesn't help me drift better. it's just keeps the overall cost of the season lower.

Kyle has 600+ this season. How many motors have i blown? My black and gold one was running when it was pulled for te REW. Ive only blown one motor in my red fc ever. 4yrs of drifting.. That **** realy pisses me off. I always have bullshit issues with wiring. Whether its ems wiring. Blowing fuses. Whatever. Ill bet on every one of my motors lasting longer than your joe dirt v8 all while making more power with a turbo making it just that much more unpredictable.

Buckey, for example - has had over 15,000 drift miles on the exact same motor completely untouched aside from upgrades...

V8s ******* suck. Seriously.

To build a v8 right the first time to be setup is thousands of dollars in machine work. To build a rotary is ten times cheaper. (build wise)

What other motor can you build for 500hp that costs under $1,700? What motor can you blow up and repair for under $200 over night?

Definitey cant spin a rod bearing or throw a rod through your block and get it back together in 6hrs....

...and have all you dudes forgotten about jtp? He had no issues getting to a few podiums in fd.

George is the only one doing well with a v8 in his fc and it isnt because of his motor its his drving.

I agree with both sides. The guys with rotaries in FD have tons of experience and they know how to build an awesome and reliable rotary, I feel like people don't want to take the time to learn how to reliably build one so they just toss it. BTW Mohan and his crew are all awesome guys, they told me if I ever deal with mazdatrix to call and ask for him directly and he will help me out.

I totally agree with you. You can have a great reliable car but if you can't drive then is all on you.
