Believe it when it is being displayed on a major auto shows stage as ready for production.

More like enthusiast, Mazda cars with rotary engines have gone down hill after the FB's, Remember when consumers purchased RX7's for the rotary engine? Now I see kids driving them (the rx8's) cause they look cool, Not caring or knowing anything about the engine

I hope Mazda figures out how to make the engines last and doesn't release the new rotary car prematurely or that might be the last of the rotary engine for a while.

It's not April 1st, today, is it? Oh wait, Adult Swim isn't showing that Tommy Wiseau flick "The Room", so I guess not. So then that means Mazda is done dangling a carrot in front of our good new rotary-deprived faces? And will actually let us take a bite?

I'm sure it won't have pop up headlights. The engine will still have side exhaust ports even though we know they don't last long (kills side seals when the carbon builds up).

A 3 rotor option? Ok now I feel like you're dangling three carrots in front of my face. It can't really be true.

It's all about 2017 and the 50th Anniversary of the Rotary Engine. My prediction is it will be a 2500 pound 2 rotor in the U.S. Market, with a 3 rotor Mazdaspeed Option in Japan, which of course, will not be offered in the U.S.

Could be the last Hoorah for the rotary engine, so enjoy the next 2-3 years! Fingers crossed that the exterior design will be worthy of the chassis and name.

$32K to $35K for 2 rotor in various trim levels
$42K to $45 for the same in 3 rotor, again, just my prediction

Hey I think its acceptable ! , a little down on my expectations but 250 is not bad ... and 3 rotor option doing maybe 350 with all kinds of cats to pass emissions , what happens when they get uncorked .........

it wont be a GTR killer or will it ?? if the 3 rotor reaches the 400 whp mark after tuning it will be a very fast car

aslong as its not side... exhaust..... if it is I'll throw my hands up and yell RUINED!

I really hope they make a triple-rotor "R3" edition. The growing number of 20B swaps for racers and tuners should send Mazda a strong message about the need for reliable power.

A reasonable engine power figure (e.g., under 500 hp) would also allow Mazda to use an existing transmission, preferably a 6-speed manual and a shiftable automatic option. I don't think 7-speed manuals will sell for long – people seem to have trouble selecting gears with that many speeds and most modern engines have a sufficient torque band. It's not like we'll be buying a triple rotor engine for fuel economy.

Well if you think about it: the enthusiast is the consumer that I am referring to. Because from a corporate standpoint, an enthusiast who isn't a consumer is worth about as much as bag of turds.

Here's something encouraging to consider regarding rotary development.

Mazda is working with MIT to study oil consumption issues and will be publishing these papers in a couple months : Visualization of the Rotary Engine Oil Transport Mechanisms and Oil Transport Cycle Model for Rotary Engine Oil Seals

This is a good sign to indicate that a rotary is in fact still being funded and developed.

It looks too similar to a mx-5. I dont think 250hp is going to cut it either. Just my opinion.
