turn it to the left.. sometimes mine gets really tight too. if you have to use a shop rag to get a better grip on it

you check the oil level when the car is off, it shouldn't matter cold or warm it should read about the same regardless. you should be letting it sit for a second or 2 to get an accurate reading not stabbing it down and pulling it out as fast as possible.

no, there should be no residual pressure in the crankcase, even if there was a tiny bit it would not hold the cap on. if you did tighten the cap down when the engine was warm last time it may have cinched itself down tighter so i suggest just snugging it down next time as they do not need to be cranked down.

try using a rag for additional grip on the cap, if you still can't get it off grab a large set of channel locks or plumber wrench and use that to get it off and hopefully it comes off in one piece.

good luck.

Well from what i read, and know. When your car is cold the oil is sitting so i would figure thats why you get a low response when you pull the needle. As for the high level, i think thats because the oil is already circulating and its the oil level is much higher.

i dont know how your oil cap got stuck, i dont recal the oil cap having any pressure of any kind. For all i know, i lost an oil cap once, while driving it just poped right off. So yea, i tend to check my oil level, or anything that has to do with oil procedures when its cold. Unless its something more comprehensive, i dont go checking the oil when its hot.

the reason you don't check it and why it is high when the engine is running is because the oil circulating and sloshing around. picture it like a pool in the morning when no one is in it, the water is calm and level, when you have everyone playing and splashing around the waves will cause the water level to register a bit higher at times.

push down and turn

mine sticks occasionally, enough that plenty of strong people who have tried.. couldn't get it to turn. however, if I push down on it while turning (like a medicine bottle?) it comes right off.

I don't know if it's designed that way or that just gets around whatever problem causes it to stick

Good luck getting it off, my 2nd rex did it all the time, i had my elbow rebuilt and i could never get it off my-self, i always had to get someone else take it off, even with a shop rag, i had to take it to hand tight, then back it off like a half-turn. At one point, i had to pour the oil down the dipstick hole to get some in the motor, since i couldnt; get the cap off. so dude i understand were you are coming from, and good luck!

I have the same problem. I use a shop rag to add to my grip. If that doesnt work i still use the rag and a nice pair of channel lock plyers.

Even after you turn off the engine, wait a few minutes before you check the oil level. it will still be innacurate because warm oil expands, and oil will still be dripping off the engine parts. This is why most full service stations don't check oil anymore, the readings are useless. As warm oil expands, when it's cold it contracts (cold mornings. Wonder why your readings are so far off?) It shouldn't make too much of a difference though.

Actually the reason is to let the oil settle, not so much because it expands when warm. The Haynes manual recommends 15 minutes, though 5 minutes is probably just enough.

Lol. I get the same problem on my Honda. Don't over-tighten when I put it on but it is a **** to get off! I think it has to do with the synthetic caps.

yeah i noticed on the screw on caps that they like to get stuck. The tab-and lock ones like on toyotas are beautiful though.

you need a man to help you. LOL

It happens to me all the time......I use a screw driver and something else (usually my ratchet) to tap it..........set the screwdriver on the cap and lightly tap to your left and it will eventually break loose.

i usually check my oil level when i get gas and what not. this is the first time i did it in the morning after the cars been sitting. it was really low and was why i wanted to add oil. after letting it sit last night i concluded if i let the car sit a day (when i sleep) the readings on the dip is real low. lower then the middle mark! is this normal?

update: the oil cap came off with ease today after i let it sit. hahahhahahh i need to go work out some more.

I used to have the same problem with the Mazda plastic oil filler cap on my 90 GXL. I then bought a replacement metal oil filler cap on ebay, and no longer have problems taking the cap off.
