Cool Johnny's FC- Ongoing Build

Hey guys, here's my '86 non-turbo S4, and it's my ongoing project for the next year or two.

For a little background, my dad has owned this car since he bought it, and has saved it for my 16th birthday this past December, so now she's mine.

I'll start with what's been done already.

Engine/Drivetrain:
Racing Beat full exhaust system (no cats)
Exedy Stage 1 Clutch
Racing Beat lightened flywheel
New water pump
New slave and master cylinders
New Mitsubishi starter motor
ULTRA 8mm street wires
NGK Platinum plugs
K&N oil and air fliters
Dayco belts
Beck Arnley fuel filter
KYB Gas Shocks (older) with Racing Beat lowering springs
TC Sportline front strut tower brace
Mazdatrix aluminum oil filler cap and crank cover

Exterior:
Mariah Mode 5 front bumper
Enkei RPF1's 17x8 all around, Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 225 all around
OEM duckbill spoiler
Shotened, powerless antenna

Interior:
Personal Grinta wheel (older, mid 90's?)
Flo-Fit seats
NRG Harness Bar (for new seats)
Racing Dynamics shift **** and boot
Second Skin Alpha Damp in doors (soon to be floor pan too)
New demister grills, all 4 of them
Repainted floor mats (black)

I may be leaving some stuff out, but that that's the gist of it. On the horizon is an interior revamp-carpet, seats, wheel, sound system. After that'll be suspension-diff, shocks and springs, brakes. I'm hoping to be updating this often, so let me know what you think!

Great car though, and an amazing birthday present. You will love it just be careful. Even being an n/a the car it will get away from you if you don't watch yourself. Happens to me all the time (Gotta watch myself making turns and going around curves).

Good luck with the car and don't be disheartened if something seems off or tears up. You will get used to it.

What I SHOULD have said is that he's owned it since 1986, I was pointing out that it's a one owner car, which is pretty rare now a days. Right?

Awesome car! Did you notice a big difference with the sound dampener in the doors? I'm thinking about adding that to my list of things to do.

I definitely did, Alphadamp is the way to go. It's already much quieter so I'm not sure I'm gonna use it on the floor pan, it is kinda heavy. I used it mainly because it's a dd and I've got a good sound system ready to install

Lol yeah sorry about that. That is definately rare. It's in great shape so I can see he has taken care of it. I hope you do the same and maybe if it's still going strong one day you can give it to your own son.
Good luck!

Thanks for checking this out guys, im doing some minor interior work this weekend, so i'll post pics, tell me what ya think. I'm thinking of going to a black carpet and keeping the rest red (re-finish it all) and black seats. Two tone???

I've been looking at various sound deadening materials as well. Since I have the whole car apart, now is the time to address those things. I was thinking about some high quality stuff on the door skins and in strategic areas like the rear wheel humps and around the spare tire pocket. I want to have some noise, but it's nice on a road trip to have it be a little quieter.

Show some more pics of the interior. The one shot makes it look like your red interior is actually a nice shade of red as opposed to faded blah.

Believe me, everything that's cloth is "faded blah", like i said i'm working on it this weekend, i'll have pics up sunday. The stuff that's most faded is the carpet and seats, which will be gone soon.

So i got some time yesterday to paint some stuff. My whole car's interior is red, and i recently had the chance to pick up some door sills and the dash vents that lead into the door system that were in much better shape than mine. Since i'm going to end up with black carpet and red trim, i thought i'd paint these black to add to the eventual two-tone scheme. I also painted the ends of my Corksport strut tower brace from their ugly orange color to a Cusco-esque blue.

For the door sills and vents i used Duplicolor Adhesion Promoter, Vinyl Coat Black, and the Acrylic Lacquer.

For the strut tower ends i used the Adhesion Promoter, Engine Enamel Blue, and Acrylic Enamel.

I added pics of the plastic pieces and strut tower ends out in the son so you can really see how the finish came out. Also added a little Racing Beat pride to the mounts on my harness bar!

Thumbs up

My god its been almost 3 months since i posted

Well school is now over and i'm planning on getting alot done this summer. In this post ill put pics of what's about to go in within the next week, i wanna get that crisp shifter feeling back so i broke down and bough all OEM parts

1. All the inner boots and bushings for the shifter
2. Sweet **** from Product Innovations
3. Black leather w/ "JDM red" stitching from Redlinegoods.com
4. JVC Bluetooth head unit
5. OEM center console (way too expensive)

I've got the complete shifter surround on the way, it should be here within a few days, then i'll install everything. Because of the picture limit i'll post what's actually been put on the car since last time, not what's waiting to go on.

New seats! Recaro Speeds, black cloth w/ red stitching. Soooooooooo sweeeeeeeet.

Here's a pic of the engine bay with the newly painted strut tower bar ends, and something unique my friend did with the wiper arms, looks good in my opinion.

Next i'll be ordering some radiator hoses, probably Samco, since i sprung an ever-so-small leak at the top of the top hose.

Update:

Wow i'm lazy, it's been nearly three months since i've updated

A good amount of work has been done on the interior and it's basically ready for the last step at this point, new carpet. Now let's get on to it...

Picture 1: Schroth Rallye Harnesses are in, stock seatbelts are out completely, these things are awesome.

Picture 2: Harness bar has been sticker-bombed, i know it's not for everyone but i wanted some flair, and the harnesses are wrapped. I think it looks really clean without the stock belts.

Picture 3: Aluminum pedal covers from Autovation, these aren't universal and you have to drill to mount them, so they're a dream. Also some new black Lloyd floor mats.

Pictures 4 & 5: NRG Thin hub and Carbon Quick Release 2.0

Update:

And some more...

Picture 1: OEM center console in, JVC blue tooth head unit in.

Picture 2: Machined "hard-bar" shift ****, Redlinegoods Shift boot, (can't see) every bushing and inner boot replaced along with fluid, makes a big difference.

Picture 3: Yes it's something small, but i love it, 300mm Broadway mirror, also helps see out of the very dark hatch.

Picture 4: Got some tinting done, 5% in the back (basically blacked out) and 30% on the sides, and my favorite Hoonigan sticker. Also got a cool Canibeat frame at Import Alliance and found some SS bolts to replace the rusted ones i had.

Picture 5: Blox Racing aluminum open-ended (40-something mm) black lug nuts.

Picture 6: Haven't worked much with the engine lately as it's running good and i'm just trying to maintain it until it's time to rebuild, but i had the ends of the strut tower bar PCed blue, and put some Nike reservoir covers in

Finally got some work done, this took way longer than it should have (2 sets of bad rotors from an unnamed company) and not a lot of free time but it's done. My brake system is set.

OEM rebuild kits front and rear, POR-15 2 step caliper paint all around (black), Mazdatrix stainless braided lines, Hawk HPS pads, EBC slotted/dimpled anodized rotors. Also coated my rear wells with POR-15 rubber undercoat.

^ Very nice progress, man!

I need to do a complete brake set-up overhaul sometime soon. This gives me a good idea of the direction I may be going. Keep it up... Oh, and those seats are awesome!

Any engine modification? Swap or anything? N/A street beast build?? You may have stated this in the first thread or so... If so, my apologies for not paying better attention. I'm a picture person. heh'

Thanks man.

Plans are to keep it N/A with an "aggressive" street-port, probably this summer. Focus is still on suspension right now, I have Stance coils on the way and a full bushing kit and Racing Beat sway bars ready to go in. Stay tuned!

My coilovers came in, Stance GR+ from THMotorsports (they had some kind of sale going on for forum members) and this past weekend I had time to get started on the rear of the car. Coils are in and set to the ride height I want and they feel great, Racing Beat sway bar, sway bar bushings, and polyurethane adjustable end links are in as well, it feels so hooked up!

Also got the chance to clean up my exhaust while it was off...
